Stop the Ads.org

Only two countries in the world allow pharmaceutical companies to advertise their products directly to consumers: New Zealand and the United States.

The FDA allowed this practice in the United States in 1997 under the Clinton Administration.

The practice is so corrupt that the American Medical Association (AMA), the trade organization that represents around 235,000 American doctors, has come out against it.

Drugs that are unproven, excessively expensive, inappropriate for specific ailments and in some cases so dangerous they have to later be recalled from the market, are pushed like soda pop and fast food.

Equally as concerning is the influence the money pharmaceutical companies give to news agencies through the purchase of advertising.

It's obviously to all that a significant portion of television news and other television programming is subsidized by the pharmaceutical industry on all networks - FOX, NBC, CNN, CBS, ABC, and others.

News agencies that are subsidized by the pharmaceutical industry are not only unlikely to be critical of the industry, they do in fact act as a public relations service for the industry including acting as attack dogs to go after industry critics.

The only group that can put a stop to this sad state of affairs and return the US to pre-1997 advertising standards is Congress.

In a recent Change.org petition, 130,638 people signed a petition asking that Congress pull pharmaceutical ads off TV.

Clearly, Congress is not listening.

Why?

Pharmaceutical companies spend over $150 million dollars a year on lobbying.

That works out to an average of $280,373.83 per Congressman - per year.
